About Fusain Forests

Fusain – the French name for the tree Euonymus europaeus, used for centuries to provide the highest quality artist’s charcoal and the French word for the charcoal made from it. In English E. europaeus is called the spindle tree, a name derived from its historical use of its wood to make fine spindles for spinning wool and other fibres into yarn.

Fusain takes the form of deciduous or evergreen shrubs or small trees. In autumn its beautiful pink fruits provide a welcome splash of colour as the seasons change.
